Your Strategic Roadmap to a Medical Seat
Navigating NEET counselling is the final, critical step. This interactive guide demystifies the process, providing the tools and strategies you need to turn your rank into an admission.
The Counselling Landscape
Understand the key players and the seat distribution system. The information below will update based on your UG/PG selection.
All India Quota (AIQ)
State Quota (SQ)
Counselling Authorities
The admission process is managed by central and state bodies. The exam conducting bodies (NTA for UG, NBE for PG) are separate and do not conduct counselling.
- Medical Counselling Committee (MCC): Conducts counselling for all AIQ seats.
- State Authorities (DMET): Conduct counselling for State Quota seats in their respective states.

Reporting
Step 1: Registration
The process begins with online registration on the official portal (MCC for AIQ or state authority). You’ll use your NEET roll number and application number to create a profile and provide necessary details.
Step 2: Fee Payment
After registration, you must pay a non-refundable registration fee and a refundable security deposit. The amounts vary by quota (Govt/Deemed) and category. For Deemed Universities, the security deposit is significantly higher.
Step 3: Choice Filling & Locking
This is the most crucial stage. You fill your preferred colleges and courses in order of priority. You can add, remove, and reorder choices until the deadline. You must lock your choices to finalize them.
Step 4: Seat Allotment
The counselling authority processes the choices based on your rank, category, and preferences. The result is published online. If allotted a seat, you can download your allotment letter.
Step 5: Reporting & Document Verification
You must report to the allotted college within the specified time with all original documents for verification. After successful verification, you complete the admission formalities to confirm your seat.
Mastering the Counselling Rounds
Each round has different rules. Understanding them is key to avoiding penalties.
Round 1
The foundation round with a crucial “Free Exit” option. If you are allotted a seat and don’t join, there’s no penalty, and your security deposit is safe. You remain eligible for Round 2.
Round 2
The commitment phase. The “Free Exit” is gone. If you’re allotted a seat and don’t join, you forfeit your security deposit. Fresh choice filling is required for all participants.
Round 3 (Mop-Up)
A high-stakes round for vacant seats. If allotted a seat, joining is often mandatory. Failure to join results in forfeiture of security deposit and potential debarment from further rounds.
Stray Vacancy
The final frontier. No new registration or choice filling. A list of eligible candidates is sent to colleges, who then conduct admissions directly based on merit.

Your Essential Toolkit
Use these resources to prepare for the final stages of admission.
7 Golden Rules of Choice Filling
- No Limit, No Hesitation: Fill as many acceptable choices as possible.
- Preference is Final: Order your list by true preference, not perceived chance.
- One List for All: Carefully order Govt, Deemed, Central Univ., etc., in one list.
- Research Before You Rank: Only include colleges you are genuinely willing to join.
- Don’t Lock Prematurely: Finalize your list but wait until the last day to lock it.
- Save Your Work: Download and save a PDF of your locked choices.
- Use a Desktop/Laptop: Avoid using mobile phones for the complex portal.
Document Checklist
This is a general list. Always refer to the official brochure for exact requirements.
Avoid These Critical Errors
Simple mistakes can cost you a seat. Stay vigilant.
Missing Deadlines
Registration, choice filling, and reporting have strict deadlines. Check official sites daily.
Poor Choice Filling
Filling too few choices or not researching colleges can lead to no allotment or a bad one.
Falling for Fake Agents
All admissions are through official MCC/State portals. Never pay agents for a guaranteed seat.
